What is

Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapists help enable individuals to engage and participate in a variety of daily living activities. Occupational Therapists use a holistic approach to learn and understand each individual and what is meaningful to them, analyse their environment, and evaluate the skills needed to perform everyday tasks.

The OT Role

OT's often refer to the word 'occupations', however we do not mean employment. An occupation is a daily activity that an individual does with purpose and meaning. This can be a hobby, tasks necessary to complete (self-care, daily living etc.), or learning opportunities such as school or work. Often times individuals will face challenges or barriers in their lives that make it difficult for them to participate in a role or activity. Occupational Therapists help support individuals to understand the skills, adaptations and strategies  they require to achieve success.

How do OT's work with children?

As children develop, their main occupation or activity is play.

Children learn how to interact with the world  through playful encounters as they learn to problem solve, explore and socialise. Similarly to adults, children can often experience challenges and barriers that may make it difficult for them to participate in play, learning, or day to day tasks.

This is where OT's come in.

A paediatric OT uses the same model and approach to working with children, however we tailor our therapy approach to be family centered. We look at the child's strengths, environment, their support network, and their areas of difficulty to encompass a therapy plan that aims to enable them to more easily achieve success.
